You might not have known it had a name, but chances are, you’ve done it.
So, what is progressive overload?
In simple terms, progressive overload is the gradual increase of stress placed on your body during training. It’s the process of doing just a little more over time to keep making progress—whether that’s getting stronger, leaner, faster, or better conditioned.
This could look like:
Lifting heavier weights
Doing more reps or sets
Reducing your rest time
Improving your range of motion or form
Advancing to more challenging exercise variations
Why Is Progressive Overload So Important?
Your body is incredibly smart. When you introduce a new challenge—like lifting weights, running hills, or doing a plank—it responds by adapting. Your muscles grow, your endurance improves, and your movements get sharper.
But once your body adapts to the challenge? Doing the same thing over and over won’t bring new results.
