Load or Depth: What's More Important for Squat Progression?

One of the most common questions we've been getting lately is:
What's more important for squat progression... load or depth?
The answer is that both play an important role, but they don't always deserve equal attention at every stage of training.
Many people focus on adding weight to the bar because heavier weights often feel like obvious progress. While increasing load is an important part of getting stronger, it should not come at the expense of movement quality.
If you cannot consistently reach an appropriate depth while maintaining good form, adding more weight may simply reinforce compensations and movement patterns that could eventually limit progress or increase your risk of injury.
On the other hand, depth alone is not the ultimate goal either. A beautiful squat with no progression in strength eventually becomes a missed opportunity to continue building muscle, confidence, and performance.
The key is understanding what your body needs most right now.
For some people, improving mobility, stability, and squat depth is the priority. For others, they already demonstrate solid mechanics and are ready to challenge themselves with additional load.
The best approach is to evaluate both.
Can you maintain proper positioning throughout the movement?
Can you reach an appropriate depth for your body without discomfort?
Can you control the movement from start to finish?
If the answer is yes, then it may be time to focus on progressively increasing load. If not, addressing mobility restrictions, balance issues, or movement mechanics may provide greater long-term benefits.
In our latest video, we dive deeper into this topic and share practical coaching tips to help you determine whether depth or load should be your primary focus. You'll also learn simple corrections and cues that can improve your squat immediately.
Remember, successful squat progression is not about choosing depth or load. It's about understanding when each one deserves your attention so you can continue moving, feeling, and performing at your best.
