7 Reasons You Should Be Strength Training That Have Nothing to Do With the Scale

A lot of people associate the gym or exercise in general with physique or weight loss. But that is old news.

There are so many reasons to strength train that have absolutely nothing to do with the scale. Strength training is about building a body that helps you continue doing the things you love and need to do as you age.

Here are seven reasons you should be strength training.

1. Longevity

If you want to age with grace and continue doing the things you love as you mature, you need to be strength training. Your overall quality of life can be much better when you are fit, strong, and training regularly.

2. Bone Density

Strength training helps support strong bones, which becomes increasingly important as we age. Strong muscles and bones can help you stay active and reduce the impact a fall can have on your independence and quality of life.

3. Everyday Activities

Raking leaves, planting flowers, laying mulch, and shoveling snow all require strong muscles and bones. Strength training helps you do those everyday activities more efficiently and safely.

4. Travel

Want to put your own luggage in the overhead compartment, move through the airport with your bags, enjoy excursions, and play with your grandkids? Being strong makes all of those things easier and more enjoyable.

We have clients in their late 70s and early 80s coming to the gym two, three, and four days a week and getting it done. Their lives are better because of it.

5. Independence

Strength helps you continue doing things for yourself. Going up and down the stairs, carrying decorations from the basement, getting up and down from the toilet, and getting in and out of the shower are all things we want to be able to do for as long as possible.

6. Joint Health

As we age, aches, pains, arthritis, and other limitations can become part of life. That does not mean you have to stop training. A good coach can help you modify exercises and work around limitations so you can continue getting stronger.

7. Mental Health

Going to the gym can help you build confidence, feel accomplished, clear your head, and create time to work on you. Life is busy, but your health deserves a place on your schedule too.

Strength training is not always going to be easy. Sometimes you will miss a workout. Sometimes you will be sore. Sometimes you will need to modify.

But consistency always wins.

If every program you have tried has left you hurt or unable to function, you may simply not have found the right program yet. A good coach should be able to adjust the intensity and meet you where you are.

Strength training is about longevity. It is about your overall health, maintaining your independence, and aging with grace.

If you are still having birthdays and you are not strength training, let’s talk.
